Our Story: From a Living Room Futon to Handmade Comfort, Four Decades Later
Some businesses begin with a plan. Ours began with a living room.
In 1981, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, our founder Lois Sachiko Hamamoto started hand-making futons for friends and family in the living room of her duplex. Back then, we were called Bright Future Futon Company—a small, homegrown operation fueled by equal parts practicality and heart. People loved what Lois made. They could feel the difference immediately: the care, the craft, the comfort that didn’t come from a factory line. Word spread the old-fashioned way—one satisfied sleeper telling another.
That’s how Sachi Organics was built: person to person, home to home, through trust.
What we make has always been personal
From the beginning, the work was never just about making a futon. It was about creating something supportive, honest, and long-lasting—something you could truly rest on. That belief still guides every choice we make today.
Over the years, our product line grew beyond futons. We began making mattresses, pillows, meditation cushions, and wool bed toppers—still with the same commitment to natural materials and a comfort you can actually feel. Trends come and go. “Fast” and “cheap” will always be tempting. But we’ve never been interested in shortcuts or mass production.
We’re a small team, and we like it that way. It keeps the work intentional.
Two generations, one purpose
Sachi Organics is still family-owned and operated—now carried forward by two generations. The tools may be different than they were in 1981, but the mindset is the same: make it well, make it with care, and treat people right.
In our workshop, materials are handled by hand. Questions are answered by real humans. And every order gets the kind of attention that’s hard to scale—and impossible to fake. We’re proud of that.
One of the greatest honors is seeing customers return year after year. Some families have been with us for generations, and we don’t take that lightly. When someone invites our work into their home, their bed, their daily rest—that’s trust. We work hard to earn it every time.
A slower, more grounded way of doing business
The world moves fast. Everything wants to be instant. But rest doesn’t work like that—and neither does craft.
We believe what you sleep on matters. What it’s made from matters. Who made it matters. Every piece we create carries a story: where it came from, how it was built, and why it was worth doing the right way.
That’s why we share so much of the process. Our “Our Story” section isn’t just history—it’s a promise. And our Instagram is an extension of that promise: a behind-the-scenes look at the calm rhythm of the workshop, the weekly mindfulness themes, and the real people making each piece with intention.
Where we started is still where we’re headed
From Bright Future Futon Company in a duplex living room to Sachi Organics today, the goal has stayed steady:
Make comfort that lasts.
Use natural materials you can feel good about.
Create rest that supports your life—night after night.
That’s our story. And we’re grateful you’re part of it.
